Before submitting an application, please review the information on our website: hewnoaks.org
We welcome applications from all kinds of artists; we have accepted a variety of visual artists, photographers, filmmakers, performers, musicians, and writers. Curators may also apply.
We also encourage collaborative applications from artists wanting to work generatively together on particular projects (see Group Application).

Hewnoaks does not discriminate in its programs and activities against anyone on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, ancestry, disability, HIV status, or veteran status. Our historic property includes steep hills and may be difficult to navigate for participants with limited mobility.

We encourage applications from artists of diverse backgrounds, races, ethnicities, gender identities, ages, and economic backgrounds.

Preference will be given to Maine applicants (about 75% of accepted applicants), but we welcome applications from artists residing outside of Maine. Applications will be reviewed by an independent jury. Hewnoaks will be open from June 23th through September 29th, 2018. Residencies run one week, ten days or two weeks. There are no partial weeks available.

The application process runs as follows:
Feb 1, 2019: Applications open
March 4, 2019: Applications close (at 11:59pm)
April 3, 2019 (or earlier): Invited residents notified with assigned weeks
April 10, 2019:  Deadline for accepted residents to confirm attendance / schedule

Participants will live in small, rustic cabins equipped with basic kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Participants are responsible for their own food and transportation and will have to bring all of their own materials. Hewnoaks does not have any designated studio spaces, so residents will need to improvise within their cabins or on the grounds. Previous residents have been resourceful in finding ways to do their work while keeping their living spaces clean.

Food and other basic necessities can be purchased at nearby stores. The property is about a 90 minute drive from Portland, and residents are responsible for their own transportation to Hewnoaks.

PLEASE read the information on our website before applying, to ensure that what we have to offer and what you hope to do are aligned properly: http://hewnoaks.org/apply/

Not all residencies offer the same things, so we want to make sure that what we have and what you need are in alignment before you go through the time and effort of applying.
