Before submitting an application, please review the information on our website: hewnoaks.org
We welcome applications from all kinds of artists; we have accepted a variety of visual artists, photographers, filmmakers, performers, musicians, and writers. Curators may also apply. We also encourage collaborative applications from artists wanting to work together on particular projects or from groups or collectives that have a stated and specific goal of working together.
Hewnoaks does not discriminate in its programs and activities against anyone on the basis of race, creed, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, sexual orientation, marital status, ancestry, disability, HIV status, or veteran status.
Preference will be given to Maine applicants (about 75% of accepted applicants), but we welcome applications from artists residing outside of Maine. Applications will be reviewed by a three person independent jury. Hewnoaks will be open from June 24th through September 23th, 2017. Residencies range from one to two weeks, depending on availability. Weeks run from Saturday to Saturday. There are no partial weeks available.
The application process runs as follows:
Feb 1, 2017: Applications open
March 4, 2017: Applications close (at 11:59pm)
April 3, 2017: Accepted residents notified with assigned weeks
April 10, 2017: Accepted residents must confirm schedule
Participants will live in small, rustic cabins equipped with basic kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. Participants are responsible for their own transportation and will have to bring everything they need in order to set up their studios. Hewnoaks does not have any designated studio spaces, so residents will need to improvise within their cabins or on the grounds. Previous residents have been resourceful in finding ways to do their work while keeping their living spaces clean.
Food and other basic necessities can be purchased at nearby stores. The property is about a 90 minute drive from Portland, and residents are responsible for their own transportation to Hewnoaks.
